South Coast Cinemaniacs: Within Our Gates (1920)
Monday, February 12, 2024, doors open 5:15 p.m., film starts 5:30 p.m.
Millicent Library, 45 Center St., use Walnut Street entrance

For Black History Month, South Coast Cinemaniacs presents Oscar Micheaux’s WITHIN OUR GATES (1920)!

A landmark film of African-American cinema, it screens like a direct response to D.W. Griffith’s BIRTH OF A NATION (1915). Following a schoolteacher’s (Evelyn Preer) journey to raise funds for her underfunded, Southern school, Micheaux depicts the problems she encounters as a black woman in the South and North.

Trigger Warning: The film is frank, intense, and at times violent in depicting the outcomes of racism. Starring Evelyn Preer Directed by Oscar Micheaux Movie Length: 79 minutes Color: Black & White

The Cinemaniacs Club meets in the library’s auditorium. All are welcome! You do not have to live in Fairhaven to join or attend events. Both are FREE to the public.

To easily access the auditorium, please enter the library through the Walnut Street doors. There are both stairs and an accessibility ramp outside of this entrance. The auditorium is the first room to the right after you enter.

Can’t make this meeting? Join them another month! The club meets the second Monday of the month, excluding holidays, to watch and discuss classic movies.
