Rhoda (Merrihew) Huttleston (1771-1841) & Henry Huttleston (1768-1832)
These were the maternal grandparents of industrialist and Fairhaven benefactor Henry H. Rogers. They were originally buried at Acushnet Cemetery and were moved here in 1877.
Henry Huttleston was a ship owner and merchant engaged in European trade, with a store at the northwest corner of Center and Middle streets. During the War of 1812 several of his vessels were taken by privateers. The son of Peleg Huttlestone and Tabitha Crowell, he married Rhoda Merrihew. Their youngest child Mary Eldredge Huttleston married Rowland Rogers and was the mother of Henry H. Rogers.
Rhoda inherited the house the Huttlestons lived in at 29 Main Street. Shortly before her death in 1841, Rhoda was also deeded the 39 Middle Street lot and house which had been owned by her mother Ruby Allen until 1835. In her will, Rhoda left the property in trust to her daughter Mary Rogers, who was then living in the house with her husband and children. The will stipulated that if Mary Rogers died before her husband, the house was to go to Mary’s children, not to Rowland Rogers.
