Hay B. Reid (1878-1948) & Norman H. Reid (1908-2005)
Hay B. Reid, a caretaker at Algonac, the Delano family estate on the Hudson River in upstate New York, was hired to become the seventh superintendent of Riverside Cemetery in 1931. He served in that capacity until his death in 1948.
After his father’s death, Norman Reid took over the position and was superintendent for 47 years, retiring at the age of 87. Many trees and shrubs found throughout the cemetery were propagated and planted by Norman Reid. He often shared his boyhood memories of the Delano estate with visitors. Following his retirement, he was allowed to continue living in the sexton’s home until his death at the age of 96.
In 1995, Norman Reid’s son Peter took over as superintendent.
