Elizabeth I. Hastings (1898-1989)

An educator and civic leader, Elizabeth I. Hastings was employed by the Fairhaven School Department from 1921, when she began teaching, until June of 1968 when she retired as principal of the Elizabeth I. Hastings Junior High School, which had been renamed in her honor a year earlier. A native of Philadelphia, PA, Miss Hastings was hired to teach at Rogers School in 1921. She soon started a school orchestra and later became supervisor of the town’s instrumental music department. She became principal of both Tripp School, 1944-1957, and Anthony School, 1944-1947, and was appointed as first principal of the new Fairhaven Junior High School, 1958-1968. Following her retirement, she served for 12 years on the School Committee until the age of 82. Miss Hastings was also active in many civic groups including the Fairhaven Improvement Association and the Fairhaven Historical Society. She was the daughter of Albert C. and Annie E. Hastings.
